So a good piece of technical knowledge I think has helped me to better understand advertising would be an understanding of the Adobe Suite and Final Cut Pro. As an undergrad, I had the chance to participate in several semester long campaign classes where we not only strategized and planned media with realistic budgets, we actually had to create working professional grade advertisements for print, radio and Internet that were critiqued by professionals and submitted to a real client.
Further, I also had the opportunity to take a film class which required us to complete several miniature films using professional equipment in the field and editing with Final Cut Pro software akin to that professional movie editors use.
Throughout these experiences, I realized the tediousness of many of the facets of producing ads in various mediums and how intricate both the planning, implementation and editing can be. Sometimes, just editing a 5 minute documentary takes up to five days and that doesn't even include sound editing and mastering.
All in all, I think this experience has helped me realized just how much time it takes between the initial idea or creative concept and the actual production. But more importantly, it has provided creedence for the belief that the idea needs to be that much better, because it will have to stand the test of time and if it is poor, will surely standout during the various stages of production throughout the campaign.
